Hello again, Toontown! My name is Joey, though you may better know me by my wacky character from the Toontown Blog: Sir Max. Some of you may have heard that after 6½ years of running the Public Relations Team here at Toontown Rewritten, I've passed that torch into great gloves, and will be shifting my focus to full-time Creative Direction.
This post is to tell you a little bit more about what that means for Toontown, and to introduce a brand new department of our team that needs YOUR help: The Game Design Team!
What is Game Design?
Game Design, in essence, focuses on designing the content and rules of a game. Game Designers work alongside artists, programmers, sound designers, and other team members to create a unified vision for how all of these things come together to make a game fun.
Who are the people that decided how much damage a Toontanic deals? Or mapped out the way that ToonTasks work? Or created the rules for Sellbot Field Office minigames? That's right: Game Designers!
Using Toontown's Design Pillars, we help the team plan creative designs for mechanics, systems, balancing, core loops, and all other aspects of gameplay while upholding the creative principles that have made Toontown outrageously fun. Additionally, the Game Design Department processes player feedback, performs data analysis, hosts playtesting sessions, identifies accessibility problems, and more.™
What Qualifications Do I Need?
There are a few different roles on the Game Design Team that require different responsibilities, which we'll talk about in a moment. Game Designers don't necessarily have to be artists, programmers, or sound designers themselves these days -- but any of these additional skills are useful!
While the applications below will dive deeper into specific qualifications: The main thing we're looking for with our new Game Design Team is a group of creative people who are excellent collaborators, and who possess deep listening skills to understand the core principles that make Toontown fun. To quote Toontown Online's original Creative Director, Jesse Schell:
'The most important skill for a game designer is listening. [...] By listening, I don’t mean merely hearing what is said. I mean a deeper listening, a thoughtful listening.'
What Positions are Available?
There are currently three positions available on the Game Design team. Here's a very brief overview for each. Click on any link to view the application and learn more!
- Game Designer
Design, iterate, and playtest game content while upholding the creative principles that have made Toontown outrageously fun. Other responsibilities include processing feedback, hosting playtests, and performing data analysis. - Level Designer
Collaborate with the development team to map out virtual spaces which solve unique challenges that arise in a massively multiplayer environment. No artistic or programming knowledge is required, however we do prefer applicants who have the ability to construct whiteboxed levels in a format that can be imported into Toontown’s game engine, Panda3D. - UX Designer
Identify accessibility problems and other impediments to the player experience, as well as design user interfaces in collaboration with other team members. Work with our art and programming teams to improve our existing interfaces and create brand new ones.
How Can I Learn More?
If you're interested in any of these positions, you should absolutely apply! We're looking to get this new team together as soon as possible, and the worst thing that can happen is we'll give you some ideas about how to improve with encouragement to apply again in the future.
If you'd like to learn more about Game Design but aren't sure where to start, you're in luck! Toontown Online's original Creative Director, Jesse Schell, literally wrote the book on Game Design. You can learn more about the book and the free app on the Art of Game Design website.
NOTE: Schell Games isn't affiliated with Toontown Rewritten and didn't ask us to advertise Jesse's book. We just really enjoy it, and there are even some stories about Toontown's development in there!
How Does This Change Impact Toontown?
Throughout the many years of Toontown Rewritten's life, I've always had to split my time between creative direction, community management, marketing, programming, team leadership, and all of the other tasks to juggle when serving as one of the leaders of a small volunteer team for a very large online game.
Luckily, the Toontown Rewritten Team is no longer quite so small! Our team is now 80 members strong, and there are finally structures in place that allow me to take some of the weight off of my shoulders by moving away from the marketing & community management side of things. In basic terms, this means that I'll be able to put more of my time towards helping the team move along projects like Sellbot Field Offices, which are scheduled for release this year.
Even with this new time on my hands, however, we can't do it without you! We need your support to keep Toontown growing, whether it's by joining the Game Design Team, a different position, or just by spreading some joy and kindness throughout the Toontown Community.
Thanks for reading this very long post, and thanks for supporting Toontown. We're working hard on new content for 2020, and we can't wait for you to play it!

Hello! I feel really excited to become a game designer for years but never got the intent of being a game designer since there was nothing really inspiring me to have a dream of being a game designer for years! I did want to learn Python and I did take Computer Science classes and it would be a dream to actually be on the TTR team one day.
Awesome!
I'm really excited to see all the new stuff you guys are adding this year! Keep up the good work!
This is a great idea, and I'm sure it'll yield some great results. I think another good idea like this would be to let the community have a place to express ideas as to what they might think would be a good addition to the game. I'm sure some people have some wacky yet good ideas for the game.
A problem :I don't know how to design things haha :(
I love this game.
yay!
Awesome job btw! Hope we continue to get great people :)

Again, thank YOU and all of the Toontown Rewritten Team for all you do in keeping our beloved game alive and thriving! Also, can't wait for TOONFEST/FX REPLAY 2020! You all are the BEST! Keep up the GREAT work! IT (the great work) and ALL OF YOU are so appreciated! THANK YOU! <3
This is so neat! I don't have any of the qualifications, however, I'm excited to see what the players and creators of ToonTown have in store for us! Best of luck to all who apply!! ~ Rudolph (Rudy)
That's great, i know i speak for all toon's when i say that I thank you for keeping the game alive after ToonTown online shut down. But those day's are over thank you ToonTown thanks for eveything!
I want the models to be slightly revamped, not too much, just enough to make it look better without taking away the nostalgia, But i don't think anyone would care if you didn't, thank you for toon town rewritten.
So cool! I'd love to but I'm not the best at designing things. Best of luck to those who apply! :D Dream big guys, you can do it! Also shout out to the TTR team for keeping the game alive, new and exciting! <3
I always been interested in learning how to design games. but never wanted to go to college for it. because game designing wasn't my first interest. but still always wanted to learn like a hobby wise.
awesome good
...Hold up! What's this? WHAT?! Well, forget this cliffhanger that I was trying to do here because I need to sign up ASAP! I have this PERFECT envision for how the end of the game will play out, and I don't want ANYONE to steal it from me! Just you wait. Someday, when you least expect it... The Legendary Donkey will strike again!
I think if implemented effectively this could really be what the game needs. Hopefully the new game design team will be able to implement the new content and gameplay Toontown desperately needs to stay alive and grow.
Is Toontown A Online Game Online
Clearly designed for those more elastic of skin, Toontown Online - as its name intimates - is a MMOG set in a day-glo world populated by upstanding creatures who are, save for the more recognisable Disney faces and stock NPCs, controlled by living, breathing people. Albeit, living, breathing people who are most probably still at the bed-wetting stage of life and doped up to the eyeballs on Sunny D.
Rather than spend precious hours slaughtering wolves and spiders, as is required by fantasy MMOG law, the aim here is to defeat roving bands of corporate-minded automatons called Cogs, whose collective aim is to take over the bubble gum streets by turning them into bleak rows of office buildings. And so, to keep the nefarious bots at bay, you and your fellow Toon citizens must engage their ranks in turn-based combat, your arsenal stuffed, not with swords and spells, but Gags' in the guise of water pistols, fruit-filled pies and weights that fall from the sky to squish those beneath.
Toontown pretty much covers the same ground as your common-or-garden MMORPG - only here, everything is less pressured and much simpler to get to grips with.
Beans Means Good
Toontown Online Game Download
There are missions aplenty which reward you with jellybeans (Toontown's currency), Laff points (health) or animation clips (skills). The missions are hardly taxing, involving lots of fetching and carrying. Variety comes with the Cog-killing tasks and these add a direction to the game and, more importantly, can be completed in as little as ten minutes.Perfect for the wandering attention spans of most children.
Other Toon pastimes worth dipping in and out of are the Trolley Games, where you climb aboard the local tram and aretaken to a random mini-game. Swimming through hoops, catching apples, tug of war and a fairly decent Pac-Man clone are just a few of the gems on offer that earn you a small stack of jellybeans to spend later.
Better still, you can play each of the eight games with up to four people, which apart from lending the proceedings a more Competitive edge, may earn even more sweet financialbenefits. With games ranging from Toon Tag (Disney's take on (perennial playground favourite British Bulldog) and Match Minnie (where you must copy the dance moves of Mickey's lady mouse friend), the spread is certainly diverse and entertaining. And if you fancy something a little more relaxed, you can go fishing at the central pond and earn yourself even more beans.
The combat itself isn't nearly as mtertaining as it might be. Much as have liked to have been able to construct an elaborate trap from pulleys, counterweights and birdseed, or don an Acme rocket pack in emulation of my onetime hero Wile E. Coyote, the combat is simply a case of selecting a gag (Cogs have an aversion to practical jokes) and hoping it hits home, then watching your opponent unleash paper clips and business jargon at you. If he explodes before you run out of Laff points, you receive the usual dribble of experience points. And the more XP you collect, the more gags become available later on.
Cheer Up You!
Combat is marginally more interesting when other players join the fray, but even with Toon-up' gags that heal other players and Sound gags that can be employed to defeat a line of Cogs, the combat really is about as basic as it gets. Seeing as Toons don't die, player death is not something you have to worry about - if you are defeated in battle, you're simply sent to the nearest playground until you cheer up.
Is Toontown A Online Game Play
Toontown is unique among its online RPG peers, but certainly isn't for everyone. If you tend to make it your aim in online games to become a high-level killing machine, then you will definitely tire of Toontown in just a few hours. Similarly, without any Guild options or proper chat facilities, if you like to role-play you're sure to despise the game for its lack of real player interaction.
Create A Online Game
However, away from the target market, the game has much to offer the older online gamer; its simplicity and diversity are definite plus points, but most of all it's just a lot of fun - certainly if you prefer to play in fits and bursts.
Along with the option to furnish your crazy Toon house, dress your character up in evermore garish apparel and even expend your wealth of jellybeans on extra moves and emotes, there's plenty to aim for and accomplish. Even on the technical side the game is not left wanting, since you can switch servers effortlessly to join your mates. Basically, all those things that dog most online RPGs don't exist here because it's hard for people to exploit the system. As a consequence, Toontown is about the most relaxed and stress-free online game there is.
